#3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback has been an essential part of my coursework. At the begin of my research I began with collecting audience feedback about music videos. I asked 50 people if they preferred to watch mainstream music videos referring to the typical pop genre music videos which tend to appeal to the majority of audiences or niche music videos. Out of the 50 people asked 29 said they preferred to watch niche music videos as they were more likely to be interested in new styles of narrative and performance which they were not already familiar with. 35 out of the 50 people questioned said they were most likely to watch music videos online on websites such as YouTube and Vimeo rather than conventional methods such as Television. This questionnaire was an important part of my research as it allowed me to explore niche genres such as Indie Folk music which Ben Howard produces. These niche genres are also increasing in popularity due to increased availability because of web 2.0 which supports the long tail theory.

As a producer of a media product audience feedback allowed be me to be specific with finding out exactly what my target audience wants to see. I have been able to directly approach my target audience with my product throughout the process of production and ask for feedback which in some cases allowed to alter my music video during the final stages of post-production to have greater appeal to my target audience. Apart from filming scenes and taking photo shoots I was working alone on my media products during pre-production and post-production so the ability to

ask audiences for feedback at any given time allowed me to understand a wide range of views on my product rather solely my own throughout the production stages. I found that as I gained more audience feedback I began to see how my storyline for music video could at different times portray different meanings to different members of the audience. This enabled me to go back to the editing stage of my music video and for example make changes in time clearer through visual lighting and the use of a calendar or making small alterations to the designs and layouts for my Digi Pack and Advert. I tried to ensure that my audience had a say during the production process of my media products so I posted blogs and asked members of my target audiences what they preferred and what they might have disliked about a product.

Audience Feedback Video

Below I have prepared a short video showing some of the feedback that I received.

Audience feedback was crucial for the production of my media products. It highlighted  strength's and weaknesses of media products and was the first initial test of the success of my product. As an artist and record company who have invested a lot of time and money into an album it is essential that the product appeals to it's target audience in order for it to have an impact on the music video.
